What it costs to actually use
The number most installers avoid. At current electricity prices a 1kW unit costs roughly 26 pence an hour at full draw, and a 2.5kW split system around 62 pence. In practice you pay less than that, because inverter systems throttle back once the room reaches temperature rather than cycling on and off at full power.
For a typical bedroom used eight hours a night through a hot fortnight, expect a few pounds a week rather than tens. Across a whole British summer, one well-used unit generally adds somewhere between £80 and £180 to the annual electricity bill.
Used for heating in spring and autumn, the same unit works in your favour: a heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, delivering around three units of heat for every unit of electricity, which makes it cheaper per unit of warmth than any direct electric heater.
